System likely to become Tropical Depression

Posted on August 16, 2010 at 10:17 PM Comments comments (0)

The remnants of Tropical Depression 5 have made their way back into the Gulf of Mexico again, giving the system a second chance at development. On Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) updated the chance of development for the system to 60%, warning of it was making it's way to West-Northwest. On Monday night, the area of risk was located just offshore of Louisiana. Computer models are suggesting the storm will make landfall in Western Louisiana.

It's likely that the system will develop into a Tropical Depression before making landfall. Heavy rainfall, surges, and gusty winds are possible all along the Northern Gulf Coast Tuesday and early Wednesday. For more information on the system, visit the National Hurricane Center website.

Houston, we've got a twitter (and facebook too!)

Posted on July 31, 2010 at 7:56 PM Comments comments (0)

Okay yes, I apologize for the extremely tacky title. I'm trying to write this post as fast as possible, I feel like getting this out to the world fast! You've probably already guessed what today's topic is, you can now follow us on twitter and facebook. Here's some information below, arranged conveniently in good-looking and equally tacky rows:

Twitter:

It's official, you can now follow us on twitter at http://twitter.com/theweathersfury! If you have a twitter account, just click the follow button, and you'll receive updates from us on your home page. As you can tell, I'm still learning some of the basics of twittering, but I'm hoping soon I'll know it like the back of my hand. (Which I still can't really remember, ironically!)

Facebook:

We've had this facebook page for awhile, I've just failed to let you guys know about it. Yea, so I'm a little lazy. At least you know about it now! Go to www.facebook.com/pages/The-Weathers-Fury/189301516904  to like the page, comment on it, and meet a few other ppl who've liked the page as well.

That basically covers this blog post. Later I'm going to be posting some handy-dandy links that you can use to follow us (links to the facebook page and twitter page) and for people who don't get to see this post to socialize with us.

Severe Weather over Washington D.C?

Posted on July 29, 2010 at 3:26 PM Comments comments (0)

Sorry I haven't been blogging very much recently, I just took a personal vacation and there wasn't Wi-Fi where I went (Old Faithful, anyone?). Today we're going look at a possible severe weather scenario that could take place over our nation's very own Capitol.

As a cold front continues to make its way towards the South, shear seems to be sufficiant enough to allow storms with very good updrafts and strength to form. The biggest concentration will be around a very moist air mass East of the Appalachian Mountains and south of the actual cold front. This will put the following states at risk:

District of Columbia

Maryland

Delaware

New Jersey

Virginia

People in these areas should keep informed of rapidly changing weather conditions by watching Local TV stations, radio, the NOAA Public Alert Radio, or by contacting local authorities.

Severe Weather Persists: Drought Threatens the Coasts

Posted on July 11, 2010 at 9:43 PM Comments comments (0)

Severe weather, drought, and heat waves? The U.S is definitely feeling the effects of summer.

Severe Weather:

Over the past few days, severe weather has continued to impact much of the nation. Looking at some of the Storm Prediction Center's storm reports, (Live updates are available on the website, here) it's hard to tell who's getting the worst.

However, a scenario is setting up conditions very favorable for severe weather development somewhere around July 13th or 14th. Most likely, the more Northern states (The Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are probable targets) will have a greater threat, as will some of the surrounding areas.

Drought:

Due to lack of rainfall and persistent heat the last few days, parts of Northern Louisiana are in the midst of a drought. Conditions are not expected to improve over the next fews day, unfortunately.

Also, drought conditions are popping up across much of the West and East coasts, however, rainfall is in the forecast. Depending on how much rainfall occurs, conditions could improve in these areas.

Climate Prediction Center Outlook

Here's an update with the CPC's predictions.

So that's this week's update, I'll be back next week with even more news!

Hurricane Alex and Tropical Depression 2 bring heavy rainfall to Texas

Posted on July 9, 2010 at 11:34 AM Comments comments (0)

As Texas recovers from the heavy rainfall Hurricane Alex brought to the area, another tropical system, Tropical Depression 2 (TD2), is bringing even heaver rainfall to the region. Tropical Depression 2, which moved inland over South Texas, was another tropical system that developed near the Yucatan Peninsula earlier this week. Already, residents in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and even New Mexico are feeling the effects of this system.

Here is some month-to-date rainfall data collected from CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network):

Jersey Village, TX: 8.72 Inches

Brownsville, TX: 6.92 Inches

Sulphur, LA: 1.83 Inches

More information on CoCORaHS can be found here.

Also, in a few days we're going to be posting an exclusive article on hurricane preparedness, so stay tuned!
